GORMAN & COMPANY’S KUNZELMANN-ESSER BUILDING TO HOUSE MITCHELL STREET MENSWEAR

Former Goldmann’s owner returns to Mitchell Street
Milwaukee, June 4, 2008

The street level retail space in the Kunzelmann-Esser Lofts Building on Mitchell Street, renovated by Gorman & Company in 2002, has itself a new tenant – a tenant who is no stranger to Mitchell Street.

Jerry Lewis, the 79-year-old former co-owner of Goldmann’s Department Store, a Milwaukee icon for 111 years until it closed last October, signed a 15-year lease on the space at 710 W. Mitchell Street and will open Mitchell Street Menswear later this year.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Mitchell Street Menswear to the Kunzelmann-Esser Lofts, which provides quality housing for dozens of artists and Milwaukee residents. The store will be a great addition to this historic Milwaukee neighborhood, and it will bring back some of the old time flavor of Goldmann’s,” said Chris Laurent, Wisconsin Market President for Gorman & Company.

Lewis agreed to close Goldmann’s last year when his partner wanted to retire, but he wanted to remain in the retail business. He immediately began planning for Mitchell Street Menswear, which is set to open September 1.

The store will occupy 7,700 square feet of the retail space and will feature urban-appeal menswear, plus a shoe department, a hat department, and an old favorite carried over from the old Goldmann’s – the store’s candy counter.
“I really just got bored being retired,” he said.

The eight-story Kunzelmann-Esser building was purchased by Gorman & Company in 2002, and the upper floors were converted into 67 live-work loft apartments. The building features amenities appealing to artists such as a dark room, pottery kiln and gallery space. The lofts are reserved for those making 60% or less of Milwaukee County’s median income.
