Milwaukee—Gorman & Co., a Madison, Wis.-based development firm, recently won the “Heart of the Community” award from the Wisconsin Commercial Real Estate Women (WCREW), a chapter of the CREW network, an industry networking organization.
The company has been recognized for converting a historic college and former home of the Milwaukee Urban League into the Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community, an 80-unit seniors housing complex in Milwaukee. Seventy-four of these apartments are reserved for residents making below 60 percent of Area Median Income (AMI).
Chris Laurent, Wisconsin market president for Gorman & Co., tells MHN that the project began in January 2006 and it was completed less than a year later, in December 2006.
The award will be presented during the seventh annual WCREW Real Estate Development Showcase Awards ceremony on Oct. 18 at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. WCREW awards acknowledge significant contributions by the development community to Wisconsin’s real estate industry. Named after a civil right leader, Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community is praised for demonstrating collaboration among private, non-profit and public entities (the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, the Milwaukee Urban League and the Next Door Foundation), and for creating a positive impact on the city’s Metcalfe Park neighborhood.
Gorman & Co. employed local contractors to transform the building. The residents of this complex participate in the continued revitalization of the surrounding community through programs such as the Next Door Foundation, a youth outreach organization.
